Wrinkles
What are wrinkles? And why we don’t have wrinkles when we’re young? Well, wrinkle is a crease or fold in the skin. When we’re young we don’t see wrinkles in our skin, it’s because our skin still does a good job of stretching and holding in moisture. As we all know we have three layers in our skin, such as Epidermis as the outermost layer, Dermis as the middle layer, and Subcutaneous as the innermost layer (Heather Brannon).
When we grow older, our epidermal cells become less sticky and thinner and it leads to the dryness in our skin. We lose 10% of our epidermal cells per decade so our skin will take time to repair itself (Heather Brannon). Dermis layer also has its own important part in our skin. Dermis is the one that keep our skin look young because there is a protein called collagen which plays prevents wrinkles. When we get older, we will lose the collagen so the dermal layer will get thinner and it will cause trouble of getting enough moisture for the epidermis. The epidermis causes the skin to sag and form wrinkles.
Even though wrinkles are a natural process of aging, it’s not necessary for us to think that we will get wrinkles when we’re old because there are chances of us to get wrinkles under our eyes during our 20’s and for some people they probably just notice wrinkles on their skin during their 50’s or 60’s. This happen because some people take a good care of their skin and some people don’t. For some people, they probably have skin’s natural oil and have good genes, meaning their family doesn’t have a lot of wrinkles.
Twins and The Aging of Wrinkles
There is a new study about wrinkles based on identical twins. Researchers gathered almost 200 pairs of twins who attended the annual twin festival in Ohio (Tara Parker – Pope). Why did they choose twins? It’s because twins are the perfect example of people who has the same genes. It’s like “the genetically programmed” to age the same way said Bahman Guyuron who’s a plastic surgeon in Cleveland, and colleagues at Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University (Tara Parker – Pope). In this study, the researchers reveal some surprising answers about what’s the factor of wrinkles and there is nothing to do with the “pricey” treatments.
Let’s take a closer look at Jeanne and Susan. A pair of identical twins who’s 61 years old but Jeanne looks way younger than Susan. The reasons are that Susan used to smoke a pack and a half of cigarettes per day during her 20’s and she quit smoking on her 30’s, she weighs 15 pounds less than Jeanne, and she moved to Florida when she was 20 years old, so she’s been under the sun a lot more than Jeanne. And for Jeanne, she never smoked and she got less sun exposure. Today according to Jeanne, Susan looks 10 years older than she is now (Kroon 229). Bahman Guyuron, a plastic surgery said that “It may seem odd that two people with the same DNA could look so different, but it’s common.” In this case, Susan used to smoke and the longer she smokes the older she looks with more wrinkles and more uneven skin tone. Susan mentioned that she weighs 15 pounds less, and according to Bahman Guyuron “for women over 40, additional weight fills in and softens wrinkles, making a heavier twin look younger than her sister.” Susan also lives under the sun, and sun exposure could speed up aging with deepens wrinkles and mottles skin, that’s why we should always apply sunscreen to prevent these effects on our skin. So basically, different behaviors could cause differences in people’s appearance (Kroon 229).
From this study the researchers found the other factor of wrinkles such as hormones, for women who take hormone- replacement therapy, and birth control pills, the higher the dose is the more likely for women to look younger it’s because estrogen can increase water preservation and make skin smoother. Also alcohol could cause the other twin to look younger than twin who drinks alcohol because excess alcohol could damage the blood vessels in the skin and it will destroy the quantity and the quality of collagen fibers in dermis layer (the one that make the skin looks young). The people who take anti-depression pills will make them look older because anti-depression pills will weaken their eye muscle and make eyes look droopy (Kroon 230). Surprisingly, divorce could cause people to look older and get more wrinkles. It happens because the level of their stress is higher than people who are married or single.
How To Reduce/Prevent Wrinkles
Here is a list about what should we do to reduce and prevent wrinkles (Colette Bouchez):
· Stay away from the sun. The sun is number one cause of wrinkles. Wear sunscreen to prevent wrinkles.
· Going to tanning salon is dangerous for our skin. The UV light is almost the same thing or it can be worse than the sun.
· Don’t smoke. Cigarette destroys the collagen in our skin and it causes wrinkles.
· Don’t drink alcohol. Too much alcohol will destroy our blood vessel in our skin and will damage the collagen fibers.
· Get enough sleep and sleep on your back. If we get enough sleep, our body will produce more hormones and help skin to remain thick and less wrinkle. Also sleeping on the side will increase wrinkles on our face and chin area.
· Don’t squint. Squinting is cause an overwork muscle and it will cause wrinkle under the eyes
· Eat healthy. Fish is good for our skin because they contain protein, and the protein will help reduce wrinkles. Fruits and vegetables will fight the free radicals the one that destroy our cells. They also make skin look younger.
· Use moisturizer and wash your face at the right time. This one is most likely for women. Skin that is moist will look better and less wrinkle. Use more moisturizer during the months when the air is drier. Don’t let the skin get dry. Also don’t wash your face too often because water could wash away the protection that our skin need.
· The most important thing is drink a lot of water.
There is another way to reduce wrinkle which is with medical treatment, such as:
· Botox: produced by botolinum toxin. Botox is for injection in a certain muscle and it will relax the skin and make the skin smooth (Colette Bouchez).
· Laser: this is a technique caused by laser to make skin smoother, tighter and free wrinkle (Colette Bouchez).
· Dermabrasion: a surgical procedure designed to remove skin imperfections, such as scars, by abrading the surface of the skin with fine sandpaper or wire brushes. (answers.com)
· Wrinkle filler: is an injection to the soft tissue, this is a product that used to minimize wrinkles around the face and neck area. (wisegeek.com)
Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are well known with their function to prevent wrinkles, but have we ever wondered what that means? Are they safe for our skin? What are do they contain? Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are very common in skin care products and cosmetic products. We usually see them in anti wrinkle products or products that will improve our skin to look better. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are a term for a variety fruits such as, glycolic acid (sugar cane), lactic acid (milk), citric (lemons and oranges), malic (apples and pears), and tartaric (grapes). And the most common particles that being used for the skin care products are glycolic acid and lactic acid because both of them have ability to penetrate / make our skin become smooth (Heather Brannon).
‘Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) work mainly as an exfoliation. They cause the cells of epidermis to become "unglued" allowing the dead skin cells to avoid making room to re-growth of new skin’ (Heather Brannon). Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are reported to improve wrinkling, roughness, and mottled pigmentation of photo damaged skin after months of daily application. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) found in skin-care products work best in a concentration of 5% to 8% and at a pH of 3 to 4 (Audrey Kunnin).
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are right choice for you if your skin is uneven, looking dry, and lifeless. AHA products will do a great job to make your skin look fresh, young, glow, and making skin look healthy. But if your skin is sensitive AHA products may not be the right choice for your skin, because AHA products will make your skin become red, have pain, itching, and burning sensation or stinging sensation. But for some people who has oily and tougher skin could deal with this product better, because AHA products will reduce the oil, pore cleansing and also as provide their rejuvenation (Audrey Kunnin). However, the two major effects of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are irritation and sun sensitivity (Heather Brannon).
Beta Hydroxy Acids
Alpha Hydroxy Acids contained in a lot of our cosmetic products, but recently there is a new chemical called Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) have more appeared as the element in our cosmetic and skin products such as, moisturizer, eye cream, foundations, cleansers, and sun screen. Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) contain Salicylic Acid, Beta Hydroxybutanoic Acid, Tropic Acid, and Trethocanic Acid. Most of Beta Hydroxy Acids are commonly used in cosmetics is Salicylic Acid. Citric Acid is also listed in Beta Hydroxy Acids even though commonly Citric Acid is referred as an Alpha Hydroxy Acids (U.S Food and Drug Administration).
The difference between Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) is their oil solubility. This means Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are able to penetrate into the pore and exfoliate the dead skin cells. Because of that, Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are better used for oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads. And Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are better for sun damage skin (Heather Brannon).
Researchers found that Beta Hydroxy Acids are less irritating than Alpha Hydroxy Acids even though Beta Hyrdoxy Acids penetrate skin deeper until the pores. However, Beta Hydroxy Acids could still cause irritation for our skin. “Symptoms of irritation include redness, burning, itching, pain, and possibly scarring. People with darker colored skin are at a higher risk of scarring pigment changes with beta hydroxy acid.” (Heather Brannon).

Blog 9
After I read a few blog from the other students of your class, I would say they really far behind.
I suggested them to stay away from plagiarism. I also shared them my experience by telling them to cite their work properly.
I also realized that two of them have the same problem as me. I admit that I'm not a good writer, and I also stuck when I chose my topic and I usually stuck on writing the introduction.

Blog 6
I went to the website that listed on the blog 6 assignment, and it gave me schedule and steps what am I supposed to do. It kind of confused me a little bit, so I'll just do what I planned to do.
I did a lot of research for my topic (Twins and The Wrinkles of Aging) and I also read a lot of articles. The only problem is, based from my research the articles are pretty much the same and don't give out too many informations. So, I still have a lot of things to do since I have to hand in the first draft on Monday. I also interested in the option number 4, to make my own website which I've done this before for my computer class. I probably would do that instead of writing an article for wikipedia. Basically, I'm still working on my paper and hopefully I finish everything on time.

Long Bibliography (Blog 5)
The only reason why I chose Twins and The Wrinkles of Aging is because of the article in Allure magazine. It really took my interest when I was reading it and it makes me want to write about it. So the first source that I got is from Allure magazine, “Living Young” by Joan Kron. In this article I found a lot of information about what keeps a woman from looking young and the study of identical twins. Also from this article, it gives me the causes of wrinkles and it shows pictures of twins and it compares of how one twin looks younger or older than the others.
The other article that I found was from the New York Times by Tara Parker – Pope. This article is pretty much the same with the Allure magazine article, but in this article is more like what we should stop to do so we don’t get wrinkles and look older in our age.
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/05/twin-studies-explain-wrinkles-of-aging/?pagemode=print
And also the similar article from ABC news.

The other article that I found was the ways to reduce wrinkles. In this article, there’s a list of things that we could do to prevent wrinkles and how to look younger.

Venue (blog 4)
I chose an article from the internet as my target publication. This New York Times aricle was written by Tara Parker - Pope. In this article, I noticed that she put a lot of questions and then she asnwered those questions with fact the she found. She also wrote the causes that make twins different, like one of the twin look older than the other twin even tough they're in the same age. She also put the age of the twins and things that you should or should not do when you're in that age. Well, basically the author wrote about the reasons why these twins look younger than the other twins.
